This Heat.

Some bands are way ahead of their time, and a few bands are supernaturally ahead of their time. Witness the following song from This Heat (recorded between 1976 and 1978), it’s pretty groundbreaking.

Camberwell Now.

A kind of post-This Heat This Heat. That is, Charles Hayward’s band after This Heat that sounded somewhat similar to This Heat while not sounding completely like This Heat. Camberwell Now, not not This Heat.

The Rza.

I love that the songs on this soundtrack all kind of sound broken. They fit perfectly with the movie, Ghost Dog. Sort of a far distance from Wu-Tang and sort of not.

The Chap.

The Chap are named after The Chap. You might say that they’re very pop-experimental, I might too. However, the bottom line seems to be more that they have fun and do whatever they want to do. Though I don’t know this for sure, I suspect that everyone in this band has a real job and that they aren’t really trying to make it. Good for them.

Bongwater.

The wildly experimental and unlikely duo of actress Ann Magnuson and producer/shimmy-disc head Kramer made up Bongwater. The two split both personally and professionally after the release of The Big Sell-Out , the album that this song is taken from. Free love does indeed mess up your life.

This is about as rock as a song can get. I’m quite sure it’s is not your thing, but if you’re going to give it a try please, please, please TURN IT UP!

Vitalic.

Vitalic is French. No surprise there. This is the most eurotrash song on the album, but it’s still good.

Of Montreal.

I can’t say that I’m totally on board with Of Montreal, but I can say that this song takes the cake.

The Dead C.

Oh how I loved this album (The White House) when it came out. The label that released it (Siltbreeze) was the awesomest of all awesome, and then it died–nothing from 2001-2007. Then all of the sudden they’re back with a new, somewhat popular band (Times New Viking). Hurrah!

This song is the apex of The White House, in my opinion. All of the noodling noise and muck builds towards this. The song is taken a bit out of context. To feel the full impact you really need to listen to the whole album.

Clark.

Not totally original, but landing somewhere in the top ranks of melodictronica, Clark busts some intricate beats without losing the thread.
